Art slows the world down and clears a space for contemplation. In my work I seek the truth of visual revelation, attained through prolonged observation. My paintings and drawings are meditations on everyday existence, exploring the concept of “being there.” This is not as ethereal as it may sound. I simply mean that many of the paintings focus on the present-ness of the object or person depicted: for example, Chicago rooftops during several weeks in the summer of 2005. I am particularly fascinated by the play of light on objects and people, and the concomitant creation of shadows.
